The Eloquent Reader

This is a very simple modification; every time you read a new book you will be granted a small portion of Speech experience.

This is a very simple modification; every time you read a new book you will be granted a small portion of Speech experience.

This mod is a spiritual successor to dryblood’s mod; Read and Learn Speechcraft Speech. Unfortunately that mod has been abandoned for some time, and had a few minor bugs in it. Due to my annoyances with the bugs, and the fact that the permissions to use the original code are locked off, I decided to have a go myself at building a new version from scratch.

The basic premise of the mod is that reading books is a good way to improve your language skills, and understanding of situations. It stands to reason that one who is versed in many tomes of lore will be able to persuade, and otherwise linguistically outmanoeuvre an opponent in a battle of wits than someone who is less learned. The Speech skill is a perfect place to show this development.

So here we are, I offer you, the modding community, The Eloquent Reader. It’s a very simple concept. For every new book you read you will gain a flat amount of experience towards levelling up your Speech skill. The newly built scripts will remember exactly which books you have read, and will make sure you only gain experience whenever you read a new title, no matter where you find it. Buy a book from a store and read it, then a find a new copy in some dungeon somewhere, and when you read that it will know that you’ve read that book before and not give any further bonus.

And that’s pretty much it for what this mod does. It’s very small, and streamlined, but I hope that some of you will enjoy using it.

Currently this mod simply requires and up to date copy of Skyrim, along with Dawnguard and Dragonborn.

Thanks to Keleigh3000 we now have a compatibility patches for Book Covers Skyrim/Lost Library and SkyRe. I would like to draw huge attention to the fact that he did this without any request, completely off his own back. For his work I am deeply thankful. Please give him the kudos he deserves.

Here’s his guide to his patches:

K3K’s guide to the patches!

Use The Eloquent Reader-BCS-BCSLL-CP.esp if you use Book Covers Skyrim AND Book Covers Skyrim – Lost Library.

Use The Eloquent Reader-BCS-CP.esp if you use Book Covers Skyrim only.

Use The Eloquent Reader-SkyRe-CP.esp if you use Skyrim Redone and don’t use Book Covers Skyrim.

And finally, if you use Eloquent Reader AND Skyrim Redone AND Book Covers Skyrim, use BCS – SkyRe Patch EN.esp available here: Book Covers Skyrim – Compatibility Patch Collection. Just make sure it loads AFTER whichever Eloquent Reader/Book Covers Skyrim patch you use.

I’m afraid further compatibility work will have to be continued by other modders. I simply don’t have time to complete all my projects and maintain patches for the hundreds of mods out there. I hope you all understand.

1.0.0 – Initial release.

Credit must be given to dryblood for his original concept; Read and Learn Speechcraft Speech.

I have a very simple permissions policy; if it’s my own work then it’s open source. You may do what you like with it. Any part of my work that belongs to somebody else, you must gain their permission to use that part (check the credits). I have two stipulations: Firstly, any work you release that incorporates any of my work must be released as open source as well (that means you MUST NOT charge money for it). Secondly, any credits given on my work must be given on yours as well.
